Begonia maculata
Spotted Begonia, Trout Begonia
Spectacular wing-shaped olive green leaves are speckled with eye-catching silver polka dots, and complemented by deep purple-red undersides. This rich, dramatic foliage is held on attractively pale branching canes alongside occasional flourishes of pretty white flowers. Growing best in bright indirect light, it will also tolerate less well-lit rooms.

Plant Biography
Begonia maculata, commonly known as the Spotted Begonia, is a species native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil. It belongs to the Begoniaceae family, a large group of flowering plants with over 1,800 species. The Begonia genus was first described by Charles Plumier in the late 17th century, named in honour of Michel Bégon, a French patron of botany.
Begonia maculata, distinguished by its striking silver spots on deep green leaves, was introduced to horticulture relatively recently. Its unique foliage and ease of cultivation have made it a popular houseplant worldwide. The plant is appreciated not only for its ornamental value but also for its ability to thrive in indoor environments, adding to its popularity among plant enthusiasts.
Care & Size Guidance
Begonia maculata thrives as a houseplant with bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. It prefers moderate humidity and temperatures between 18-24°C. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, avoiding overwatering to prevent root rot. Ensure good air circulation to minimise fungal issues. Prune regularly to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth (the pruned growth can be used as cuttings).
The plant can reach up to 100cm in height, making it a striking focal point in indoor spaces. Fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. With proper care, Begonia maculata will reward you with its distinctive polka-dotted leaves and delicate white or pink blooms.
