Chinese fan palm, fountain palm

From: £47.95

Livistona chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese Fan Palm, is an elegant, slow-growing palm with large, fan-shaped leaves that arch gracefully from slender stems. Native to East Asia, this ornamental plant is ideal for both outdoor gardens and as an indoor houseplant. Indoors, it typically reaches a height of 1.8 to 3.6 metres but can grow much taller in natural habitats.

The deep green, glossy leaves add a tropical aesthetic to any space. Livistona chinensis is low-maintenance, thriving in well-drained soil with moderate watering and indirect sunlight, making it a popular choice for UK homes. When larger, it could be tried outdoors in the mildest parts of the U.K. as it can tolerate a few degrees of frost.

Plant Biography

Livistona chinensis, commonly known as the Chinese Fan Palm, originates from the subtropical regions of East Asia, specifically China, Taiwan, and Japan’s Ryukyu Islands. This palm belongs to the Arecaceae family and thrives in the warm, humid climates of its native habitat. It was first described in Western horticulture by the German botanist Carl Ludwig Blume in the 19th century. The plant has since gained popularity worldwide, particularly as an ornamental palm due to its attractive, fan-shaped leaves with leaflets that droop at the end, giving the effect of a fountain.

In its natural environment, Livistona chinensis can be found growing in forests, near rivers, and in coastal areas, where it benefits from the high humidity and well-drained soils. Its adaptability has allowed it to become a popular choice for both outdoor landscapes and indoor cultivation. Originally found in East and South East Asia, the Livistona chinensis has spread rapidly as an indoor plant due to its compact form and fan like crown. Young plants are usually kept as indoor specimens, but as they develop into larger palms they can be hardy down to -4C and thus can be kept outdoors in sheltered spots.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Livistona chinensis, or Chinese Fan Palm, grows up to 3 metres tall indoors but remains compact in containers. This slow-growing palm thrives in bright, indirect light and tolerates lower light levels, making it ideal for indoor spaces. It prefers well-draining soil and should be watered when the top inch of soil is dry, ensuring it’s not left waterlogged.

Humidity levels should be moderate, and misting the leaves occasionally helps. Fertilise monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Prune any brown or damaged fronds to maintain its appearance. Over time, it can become a striking centerpiece in your home with its fan-shaped leaves. In the mildest parts of the country, it could be tried outdoors permanently, but wait until the plant has begun to form a trunk before attempting this.
