Plant Biography

Melianthis major is a suckering, evergreen shrub with large, deeply-incised, glaucous grey-green leaves with margins serrated as if cut out with pinking shears. The leaflets are loosely folded into an upright V shape whilst the leaf itself gracefully arching. The whole effect is sublime, contributing to the Honey Bush being one of the finest foliage plants it is possible to grow in the UK. Leaves have a pungent odour redolent of, according to the nose, roast beef or rancid peanuts. Spires of ridiculously exotic russet-brown flowers, dripping with nectar are followed by inflated green seed capsules. All parts are poisonous if eaten.

Delighted with this lovely healthy plant and looking forward to seeing it flourish in my garden. Our local park had a beautiful mature specimen, I’m hoping mine will grow big and beautiful too.
