Rarely seen in the U.K., this elegant palm from the Pacific Islands makes a great houseplant. Fast-growing, the wide leaflets bring a touch of the lush tropics to any situation.

Give it plenty of light and keep the soil evenly moist, and it will reward you with accelerated growth. Will tolerate low temperatures but do not expose it to frosts. Can even be kept outdoors during the warmer months.

Plant Biography

Although it originates from two small islands in the Pacific, Veitchia joannis has become popular around the world as both an indoor and outdoor palm. Planted outside in the tropics it can reach up to 40 metres in height but a potted specimen indoors will thankfully grow to smaller dimensions.

The long leaves with their wide leaflets droop down gracefully from the trunk – a similar look to Howea forsteriana. This palm has a beautiful grey-green crownshaft which is even visible on younger plants.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Relatively easy to care for, this palm grows happily in pots and responds well to regular feeding and watering.

If given a large pot, Veitchia joannis will grow quickly. To slow down its growth, don’t pot it up too often.

Although plants can take full sun when larger, we recommend giving them just morning or afternoon sun as indoor plants.

Responds well to regular feeding with a palm fertiliser from April to September.

Expert Tip

Every other month give the plant a good shower to clean the leaves of dust and make them shine again. Avoid using leaf shine sprays and oils as this may clog the pores and kill the leaves.
