One of the most popular and easy to care for houseplants in the world, the Spider Plant is a fantastic choice for any room in the home, looking fantastic cascading from a shelf or pouring out of a hanging basket.
Chlorophytum comosum ‘Vittatum’ is a variegated cultivar with a rosette of lush green arching foliage, striped with subtle shades of pale green along the blades, surrounded by creamy white variegated edges. This cultivar is less compact than the ‘Ocean’ cultivar.

Plant Biography
Native to South Africa, Chlorophytum comosum is a perennial flowering plant widely distributed as ground cover in forests and along rivers in steep valleys, growing up to 60cm in height.
It has gained in popularity because how easy it is to care for, and this at least in part due to its adaptation to the low-light conditions of the forest floor. It’s so successful that it has become naturalised across the tropical regions of Africa and Australia.
Expert Tip
Spider Plant 'Babies'
If you’ve ever owned a Spider Plant it’s likely you will have witnessed new Spider Plant ‘babies’ or ‘spiderettes’ grow out from it. When the plant is mature enough (usually within a year) and in the right conditions, a flower stem will emerge, potentially producing a flower which is then replaced by these ‘babies’, called plantlets.
These plantlets are essential to Chlorophytum comosum’s survival in the wild, where the plantlets grow long enough to reach the ground, allowing the plant to successfully reproduce and thrive as ground cover. It’s actually the appearance of the plantlets which give Spider Plants their common name.
These plantlets are easy to propagate yourself, just snip off the plantlet and plant in potting soil – no water propagation is needed.
Care & Size Guidance
Spider Plants are incredibly tough and easy to care for, making a perfect gift for a new plant owner. Whilst it thrives most in bright indirect light, it is tolerant of low light conditions.
Make sure not to overwater as this can cause root rot. To make sure, simply let the top few inches of soil dry out between waterings.
If you want your Spider Plant to abundantly produce plantlets it will need a good amount of light – in poor lighting conditions it will only produce leaves.
