Fuchsia arborescens

Tree Fuchsia

£18.95

Fuchsia arborescens, or Tree Fuchsia, is a tender, evergreen shrub which (as it’s name suggests) may grow to the size of a small tree if kept in a frost-free location. It features glossy, dark green leaves and produces abundant clusters of pendulous, tubular flowers in white or pale pink, attracting pollinators.

This Fuchsia thrives in full sun, but will also grow in partial-shade. It prefers a well-drained soil, but also needs constant moisture at the roots. Although the foliage can survive brief dips just below freezing, the plant will die back after a long frost. However the plant can survive in the mildest parts of the UK, behaving as a herbaceous perennial. Alternatively, it is quite happy living in a large pot which can be brought undercover for winter.

Plant Biography

Fuchsia arborescens was first formally described by the French botanist Henri Galeotti in the mid-19th century. Galeotti, renowned for his extensive botanical explorations in Mexico and Central America, documented the species’ distinctive characteristics, including its tall stature and pendulous flowers. The plant belongs to the genus Fuchsia, named in honor of the German botanist Leonhart Fuchs.

Over the years, Fuchsia arborescens has been admired for its ornamental value, particularly in frost-free, temperate gardens where its elegant blooms and evergreen foliage flourish.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Fuchsia arborescens thrives in temperate climates and prefers full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. It is crucial to water regularly to maintain soil moisture, especially during dry spells. This evergreen shrub can grow up to 2.5 metres tall and wide, so it benefits from occasional pruning to manage its size and shape. Pruning should ideally be done after flowering to encourage new growth and ensure prolific blooming in the following season.

In the mildest parts of the UK, you can try growing it outside in a sheltered microclimate, preferably with some overhead canopy. Protect from frost by covering with a fleece jacket. If it gets frosted back, apply a thick layer of mulch to protect it from further cold and it may re-sprout from the roots in spring.
