The Umbrella bamboo is one of the more robust Fargesia bamboos.

Fargesia robusta ‘Wenchuan’ is distinguished from other cultivars by its arching form and more open growth habit. It has reddish culms and branch sheaths and larger leaves than many cultivars, giving it a very tropical appearance.

‘Wenchuan’ is also is marginally more vigorous than the popular ‘Campbell’ cultivar.

Plant Biography

Native to Sichuan in China, Umbrella Bamboo is of great importance in its native range as it is a food source for the giant panda.

Fargesia robusta is a perrenial and one of the earliest bamboos to shoot in spring.

The ‘Wenchuan’ cultivar has particularly large, tropical-looking leaves.

We ordered 6 plants to transfer into planters (80cm length each planter) after we did some homework on bamboos. The plants arrived within the estimated timeframe, we got a wrong product initially by mistake but Palm Centre apologised and sent us our bamboos the following day. They also gave advice on planting. All good so far, plants are in their planters and growing as expected. Palm Centre came highly recommended and it is indeed a great company.

I ordered two of these Bamboo plants. Communication with regards to my order, timescales and delivery were clear, precise and the items arrived on schedule and very well packaged. Both plants were reasonably healthy although differed in shape and size – perhaps it would be wise to request similar in appearance if required. Would recommend.
