Known commonly as the Japanese Painted Fern, the enchanting fronds of this deciduous fern appear almost painted – in fact its amongst the most distinctly colourful of all cultivated ferns.

The ‘Red Beauty’ cultivar is distinguished by its burgundy red stems, with colour that appears to seep into the base of the leaves as it develops.

Native to Eastern Asia, hence the name ‘niponicum’ which refers to the Japanese name for Japan ‘Nippon’. Athyrium niponicum ‘Red Beauty’s distinct metallic silver-grey and green fronds, with deep burgundy veins, make it one of the most popular ferns grown today.

The unique tones this fern’s foliage exhibits gives it enormous potential in garden design to create colour contrast and provide an ethereal presence amongst the other plants in the shady border of your garden.
