Plant Biography
Alocasia Portadora, known as the Upright Elephant Ear, is part of the Alocasia genus, native to tropical regions of East and Southeast Asia, particularly the rainforests of Borneo, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The genus Alocasia is known for its striking, often large foliage, and belongs to the Araceae family, which includes other popular indoor plants like Philodendrons and Monsteras.
Historically, these plants were prized for their ornamental appeal in tropical gardens and later gained popularity as indoor plants for their exotic look. Alocasia species have been cultivated and hybridised to emphasise size, leaf shape, and colour, with ‘Portadora’ being a well-loved hybrid of Alocasia portei and A. odora known for its bold, upright leaves.
Care & Size Guidance
Alocasia ‘Portadora’ is a moderately easy plant to care for indoors, making it a popular choice for creating a tropical atmosphere. It can grow up to 1 or more metres tall indoors, with large, glossy leaves that add a striking presence to any space. This plant thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate some lower light conditions, although growth may slow.
Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot; well-draining soil is essential. Alocasia ‘Portadora’ also enjoys humidity, so misting the leaves or placing it near a humidifier can promote healthy growth. Fertilise monthly during the growing season, and be aware it may enter dormancy in cooler months, requiring less water and maintenance. In warmer areas, it can be placed in a sheltered spot outdoors from June-September.
