Plant Biography
Adiantum raddianum, commonly known as the Maidenhair Fern, belongs to the Pteridaceae family and is native to tropical regions of South America. The species was named after Italian botanist Giuseppe Raddi, who made significant contributions to botanical science in the early 19th century.
‘Fragrans’ is a cultivated variety known for its particularly fine, fragrant foliage and compact growth. Maidenhair ferns have been admired since ancient times, often associated with themes of delicacy and beauty. They became especially popular during the Victorian era’s fern craze, valued both as ornamental houseplants and as greenhouse specimens due to their elegant, airy appearance.
Care & Size Guidance
Adiantum raddianum ‘Fragrans’, commonly known as the Delta Maidenhair Fern, is a delicate indoor plant that typically reaches heights of 50-75cm. It thrives in bright, indirect light and requires consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Maintaining high humidity is crucial; regular misting or placement in humid areas like bathrooms is beneficial.
Ideally, keep the temperature between 16–24°C, and avoid cold draughts. Monthly feeding with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser during spring and summer supports healthy growth. Repotting every one to two years in spring helps to accommodate new growth and refresh the soil.
