A distinctive fern originating from Australia, Asplenium dimorphum x difforme ‘Parvati’ thrives in a warm humid room with moderate indirect light.

Commonly known as the Mother Fern, it features distinctive, thick dark green desiccated fronds, unusual for Asplenium. These features make it rather forgiving of fluctuations in temperature or periods of drought compared to other tropical ferns, making for a great no fuss fern addition to any collection.

Plant Biography

A surprisingly unique fern, as it looks nothing like other members of the Asplenium family, Asplenium dimorphum x difforme ‘Parvati’ was created in Australia as a hybrid between A. difforme and A. dimporphum.

The stiff, waxy fronds of this evergreen hybrid fern make it more forgiving to variations in ambient humidity than other sub-tropical and tropical Asplenium species, as the waxy coating allows it to store and use water more effectively and resist wilting in dry heat.

Expert Tip

The Mother Fern makes a great hanging plant as the fronds will grow increasingly large and, as they weigh more, start to arch pleasingly down from the pot.

Care & Size Guidance

The Mother Fern is easier to care for than most tropical ferns.

It is moderately slow growing, with an eventual maximum indoor height of approximately 50cm. Avoid bright direct sunlight and water when soil surface begins to dry, and never leave it to sit in water. Avoid watering into the centre of the rosette as this can cause rot.

Any damaged or dead fronds may be carefully removed as needed. Rotate to ensure even growth and form, and improve humidity if the edges of the leaves tend to go brown.
