Plant Biography
Beaucarnea recurvata, commonly known as the Ponytail Palm, is native to the semi-desert regions of eastern Mexico. Despite its palm-like appearance, it belongs to the Asparagaceae family, making it more closely related to Agaves and Yuccas. The species was first described in Western horticulture in the 19th century and gained popularity as an ornamental plant due to its unique, bulbous base and cascading, ribbon-like leaves.
The swollen trunk stores water as an adaptation to its arid native habitat and is one of the principle features that has made it popular as a cultivated plant. Over time, Beaucarnea recurvata has become a popular houseplant worldwide, valued for its distinctive appearance, drought tolerance, and ease of care, making it a favourite among plant enthusiasts.
Care & Size Guidance
Beaucarnea recurvata, or Ponytail Palm, is an easy-care houseplant that can reach up to 3 metres indoors, though it grows much taller outdoors. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light conditions. This drought-tolerant plant requires minimal watering; allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as its bulbous trunk stores water. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
Use well-draining soil, and avoid frequent repotting, as it prefers to be slightly root-bound. Beaucarnea recurvata is slow-growing, making it ideal for small spaces. It also appreciates occasional feeding during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertiliser. This resilient plant is perfect for beginners and busy plant owners.
If kept dry Beaucarnea recurvata can tolerate a good deal of frost but if even a little damp the bulbous stem will rot, so it makes a wonderful specimen for the summer patio, house, conservatory or greenhouse.

I bought the 9 litre (mid-size) and absolutely love it. This size makes a perfect balance to the larger palm tree and smaller Dypsis which I also bought to revitalise my conservatory. I love the unusual shaped trunk and the way the leaves hang in a lovely elegant circle at the moment. I look forward to watching the individual branches grow. Great service, good communication (check junk for initial e-mail confirmation of order), delivery on schedule and well packaged. No complaints!
