Acer palmatum f. dissectum, Acer palmatum var. matsumurae
£399.00
Acer palmatum ‘Beni Hagoromo’ displays deeply cut, feather-like red foliage that turns brilliant crimson in autumn. This compact Japanese Maple offers year-round structure and texture. Ideal for smaller gardens or containers and has been cultivated for its elegant form and foliage for centuries.
‘Beni Hagoromo’ is a selected horticultural variety, raising interest among collectors since the late 20th century for its unique feathered leaf structure. Its name translates from Japanese as ‘Red Feather Robe’, referencing the finely dissected red leaves reminiscent of a traditional kimono sleeve or robe. Japanese Maples were historically prized in temple and tea gardens for their serene beauty and seasonal dynamics. Today, ‘Beni Hagoromo’ continues that heritage, celebrated for both its ornamental appeal and compact size, making it accessible for gardens worldwide.
Expert Tip
Best planted in a sheltered spot with dappled sunlight, such as a woodland border or a courtyard garden. Works beautifully alongside ferns, astilbes, and low-growing hostas for layered texture. Its compact structure makes it well-suited to raised beds or large containers. Use as a specimen tree to highlight its unique leaf shape and seasonal colour changes.
Feed Acer palmatum ‘Beni Hagoromo’ in early spring with a Trees & Shrubs Growth Fuel, a controlled-release fertiliser applied once a year. When grown in pots, consider repotting every 2-3 years in spring to maintain healthy growth and soil structure.
