What is terrazzo?
The name describes more the style rather than the materials themselves. In antiquity, the name was used to refer to Egyptian mosaics. Around the 18th century, it became associated with Venice, ‘pavimento alla Veneziana’ where workers were placing marble fragments next to each other in a mortar base.
These days, terrazzo is a composite material consisting of chips of marble, quartz, granite, or glass embedded in a cement or resin matrix. It is commonly used for flooring and countertops, providing a durable and visually appealing surface.
The mixture is polished to achieve a smooth and glossy finish, creating a distinctive and versatile decorative option. Despite terrazzo’s long history, it continues to be a popular choice in contemporary design.
