Ensete glaucum
Snow Banana
Ensete glaucum, also known as the Snow Banana or Blue Banana, is a stunning tropical plant native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. This ornamental banana features large, paddle-shaped leaves with a unique bluish-green colour. The Snow Banana can reach up to 4 metres tall in its natural environment but generally remains smaller in cultivation.
The plant eventually produces small, inedible fruits, making it primarily decorative. Ideal for warm, humid climates, Ensete glaucum thrives in well-draining soil, full sun, and regular watering, adding a lush, exotic touch to gardens and landscapes. It can tolerate temperatures down to 0°C, but will need to be brought undercover during freezes. Perfect for creating a tropical ambiance.

Plant Biography
Ensete glaucum, commonly known as the Snow Banana or Blue Banana, belongs to the Musaceae family, closely related to the true banana (Musa spp.). Native to the high-altitude regions of Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent, it has been cultivated for centuries as an ornamental plant and for its fibrous pseudostem, used in traditional crafts. Unlike its edible banana relatives, Ensete glaucum produces small, inedible fruits, emphasising its ornamental value. The plant’s striking blue-green leaves and towering height have made it popular in tropical and subtropical gardens worldwide.
Although first described nearly 200 years ago, it is only in the last decade or so that Ensete glaucum has been widely cultivated outside of Asia. Snow Banana, as the name implies, is found at considerable altitude in habitat but, despite initial hopes of hardiness, it does not survive a normal British winter outdoors. Nevertheless it is a magnificent specimen for summer bedding to be then dug, potted and overwintered under glass.
Care & Size Guidance
Ensete glaucum, or Snow Banana, can grow up to 4 metres tall in ideal conditions, but in the UK, it typically reaches 3-4 metres. It thrives best in a sheltered, sunny spot with well-draining soil. Although it’s a hardy plant, it cannot tolerate frost, so it’s recommended to keep it in a large container for easy relocation indoors during winter.
In cooler climates, bring the plant inside when temperatures drop below 5°C, or protect it with heavy mulch and fleece. Regular watering is essential during the growing season, but reduce watering significantly in winter. Feed with a balanced fertiliser during spring and summer to encourage healthy growth.
