Plant Biography
Originating from tropical regions of the Americas, Ipomoea indica was first introduced to Europe as an ornamental in the 18th century due to its spectacular blue flowers. It can frequently be found growing wild in subtropical climates around the globe, where its twining habit allows it to climb across woodland edges and open spaces.
The generic name ‘Ipomoea’ derives from Greek words meaning ‘wormlike’, referencing its twining stems. In its native regions, it is sometimes used for groundcover or embankment stabilisation. The plant’s popularity as a decorative climber has ensured its continued use in temperate gardens, provided with winter protection.

Care & Size Guidance
Plant in a sunny, sheltered position, ideally south-facing, to protect from cold winds and frost. Provide a sturdy support such as a trellis or pergola, as the twining stems can become heavy and sprawling. Water thoroughly during dry spells in summer, but reduce watering in winter to prevent root rot. Occasional pruning encourages bushier growth and extended flowering.
In frost-free areas it can be planted outdoors permanently. In colder areas, take cuttings in later-summer and overwinter them under glass, or grow the plant in a container that can be moved indoors over winter.
