Variegated Eastern Holly Fern, Variegated Shield Fern
Native to woodland streams, cliff crevices and forested areas in Japan and China. The genus gets its name from the Greek ‘arachne’, meaning spider, because of its spider-like clusters of spore capsules.
This fern is rare in cultivation and certainly a must-have for the fern enthusiast.

Plant Biography
Known as the ‘Variegated Eastern Holly Fern’, Arachnoides simplicior ‘Variegata’ is an extremely hardy dark green fern, with tough and waxy textured fronds arranged into airy slender fingers.
Pale central stipes run along the length of each leaflet, giving this fern bright, and in the fern world, rare variegation.

Arachnoides simplicior ‘Variegata’ is extremely hardy, but late to get going in Spring, often producing new growth around June. Around when new growth begins, it’s best to start guarding against slugs and snails.
