Chamaerops humilis

Mediterranean Fan Palm

(156 customer reviews)

From: £14.95

A beautiful and extremely tough palm, and deservedly one of our most popular.

The Mediterranean Fan Palm is a small clustering palm, with distinctive, huge green leaves which spread out in a very attractive fan form.

Chamaerops humilis is tolerant of drought once established, suited to sun or part shade, a cold garden or hot conservatory, exposed gardens or balcony planters – this palm is remarkably easy to look after and grow.

Plant Biography

Native to the Mediterranean and Southwestern Europe, Chamaerops humilis is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world, found as north as the south coast of France.

Chamaerops humilis is the only species in the genus Chamaerops, though the genus is closely related to the Asian genus Trachycarpus, differing in the spined petioles, and its multi-stemmed clustering habit.

The Mediterranean Fan Palm is a beautiful specimen plant for any garden. Unpruned it grows into an attractive shrubby form. If pruned, it will grow into a single trunk tree form. This palm works perfectly to add an accent to the corner of the landscape, or in a container for a patio or deck.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Chamaerops humilis has better winter hardiness than most other palms, tolerating brief dips to -6 to -9C. If grown in a colder area, it can be kept in a container to bring indoors when necessary, so long as it’s in a bright, sunny spot.

It prefers a bright and sunny location, but will tolerate part shade. However, if it’s grown in too much shade it will lose its compact form.

"Beautiful Palm, looks great in my new raised bed. I am ordering another one. Price is unbelievable for such a quality plant."

Received 2 12ltr pots of the chamaerops and musa basjoo. Great looking plants. Did have one or two issues but these were very quickly sorted out in a very professional manner. Will definitely be using your company again! Well done and thank you.

Ordered a single trunk chamerops humilis and stated on the order that i want to single trunked like the one in the picture,a few days later my parcel came and was dissapointed as a multitrunked chamaerops with a giant crack right through middle of pot.1 star for bad service online, will next time order on phone or go to shop.

Palm Centre replies: Dear Nathan, the palm tree that was chosen for you was exactly like the picture. As my colleagues explained to you over the phone, the suckers that grow next to the main trunk are not other trunks, and they will shoot out regularly from the ground. Chamaerops humilis is a well known species for its bushiness, which require regular pruning.
We do apologize for the pot being cracked on arrival, its unfortunate what happened. We have forwarded the complaint to the courier.
However, the pots we u
se to deliver the plants are nursery pots used only to hold the root ball in place until the plant reaches its final place (a new pot or ground), they are not ment to keep the plant for long, as it might stress it out pretty quick.
