Plant Biography
Verbena bonariensis, also known as tall verbena, is native to South America, specifically Argentina and Brazil. The plant was first discovered and described by French botanist Philibert Commerson during his exploration of South America in the 18th century. It was later introduced to Europe in the 18th century, where it gained popularity as an ornamental plant for its striking appearance and ability to attract butterflies and other pollinators.
Championed by the likes of Beth Chatto and John Brookes in recent years, Verbena bonariensis has become an extremely fashionable and almost ubiquitous plant for the drier garden. It has so much to offer that there is barely room to start – upright, self-supporting stems bearing fragrant, tight clusters of violet-mauve, nectar-rich flowers. Planted in drifts and allowed to self-seed (as it inevitably will) and roam freely amongst – never swamp – shorter companions, with its colour carried transparently and airily above, it can tie together a mixed border of arid plants in a way that few other plants can match.
With its extended blooming period from late spring to autumn, this hardy perennial is a delightful addition to naturalistic plantings and cottage-style gardens. Embrace the charm of Verbena bonariensis and enjoy its enduring beauty and pollinator-attracting qualities in your garden. Order now to infuse your landscape with a dash of purple allure.
Care & Size Guidance
Verbena bonariensis is a striking perennial plant known for its tall, slender stems topped with clusters of small, lavender-purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it ideal for borders, cottage gardens, or wildlife-friendly spaces. Growing up to approximately 1-1.5 metres in height, this airy plant adds vertical interest without overwhelming other plantings.
It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal care, though deadheading spent blooms can encourage prolonged flowering. Cut back old growth in late winter or early spring to promote vigorous regrowth. Verbena bonariensis can also self-seed, creating natural drifts of its elegant, nectar-rich blooms.
