Plant Biography
Acer palmatum, even tough called Japanese maple, originates in most East Asia and East parts of Russia. The species comprises of thousands of named cultivars and forms.
It has been used for centuries in the Japanese gardens, and its English common name is a reflection of the first tree brought back to the UK in early 19th century.
The species epithet ‘palmatum’ is a reference to the shape of its leaves, deeply divided into 5 lobes.
Care & Size Guidance
Their finely dissected leaves are a study in light and shadow and always lend a touch of class to a mixed planting. Soil needs to be evenly moist and preferably chalk-free to prevent leaf tips from scorching.
Can also be easily grown in a tub as long as watering needs are catered for.
Acer palmatum var dissectum ‘Inaba-shidare’ is a smaller cultivar with deep burgundy leaves that change to scarlet in autumn.
