Plant Biography

The history of Bougainvillea plants traces back to their discovery in the 18th century by French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville during his expedition to South America. These tropical beauties were named in his honour.

Originally from Brazil, they quickly spread to other parts of the world due to their vibrant and showy blooms. Bougainvilleas became popular ornamental plants, particularly in warm climates, for their ability to thrive in hot and dry conditions. Over time, horticulturists and botanists developed various cultivars, enhancing their colours and forms. Today, Bougainvilleas remain beloved and cherished, adorning gardens, landscapes, and buildings with their stunning and vivacious floral displays.

This hybrid variety of Bougainvillea is believed to have originated in Mèze, a charming town in southern France. The plant’s history and development are not extensively documented, but it likely resulted from selective breeding to enhance its unique colour and appearance.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Bougainvillea need full sun to grow well and bloom profusely.

While we do not recommend putting this plant permanently outdoors in the British climate, it is known to be one of the hardiest varieties of Bougainvillea, reportedly coping with temperatures down to -8°C. Therefore, it is definitely worth experimenting with in the most sheltered of gardens and in unheated conservatories and greenhouses.

It can also be grown in a large pot and moved undercover during the coldest periods. Use a well-draining, somewhat-acidic soil and water them thoroughly when the top couple of centimetres of soil feel dry, but avoid overwatering. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser. Prune lightly to shape and remove dead flowers for continuous blooming.
