Plant Biography
Clerodendrum trichotomum, commonly known as Harlequin Glorybower, is native to China, Japan, Taiwan, and other parts of Southeast Asia. It was first described in western horticulture by Carl Linnaeus in the 18th century, and its unique appearance and fragrance soon gained popularity in European botanical gardens. This deciduous shrub or small tree is known for its star-shaped, white, and fragrant flowers that bloom in late summer, followed by striking, bright blue berries encased in red calyxes.
Historically, it was used in traditional medicine in its native regions, with leaves and roots believed to have medicinal properties. Over time, Clerodendrum trichotomum became a favoured ornamental plant in temperate gardens due to its late-season blooms and eye-catching fruits. The variety fargesii has gained the RHS Award of Garden Merit. in 2017.
