Cupressus cashmeriana is native to the eastern Himalayas, particularly in Bhutan and adjacent regions of India where it grows on hillsides and in monastic gardens. It was first described scientifically in the 19th century when collectors noted its ethereal, pendulous foliage and unusual colouring compared to other cypresses.

The common name ‘Bhutan Cypress’ reflects both its national significance and preferred environment.
