Plant Biography

Phillyrea angustifolia, or narrow-leaved mock-privet, is an evergreen shrub or small tree that is native to the Mediterranean region. It typically grows to between 6 and 10 feet tall, with an upright, rounded habit. The foliage is made up of small, narrow, dark green leaves that are glossy on top and hairy underneath. The small white flowers appear in spring and are followed by black berries in the fall.

The Narrow-leaved Mock-Privet is widely used in landscaping and horticulture due to its easy maintenance, drought tolerance, and attractive foliage.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Phillyrea angustifolia can be grown in a variety of soils and climates, but prefers full sun and well-drained soil. It is also tolerant of salt spray and wind, making it a popular choice for coastal gardens.

Plant in early spring, in a full sun position to allow the plant to thrive. Water more frequently in the first season to allow the plant to grow a strong root system. Once established, the plant will be fairly drought resistant and thrive with little to no care.

Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser and water more frequently in hot summers.

Prune twice a year to keep in check, if necessary, and to allow the plant to become bushier.

Plant trivia

You would not believe it, but the Phillyrea angustifolia has no connection to the common privet (Ligustrum ovatifolium), but it's rather closely related to the common olive tree (Olea europaea)! When fully established, it may come easy for the untrained eye to get the two species confused.
