Plant Biography
Scindapsus pictus is originating in the tropical forests of South Asia, from India all the way to Philippines. Albeit a flowering plant in the wild, in cultivation the Silver Vine rarely flowers.
The epithet ‘pictus’, meaning ‘painted’ refers to the silvery variegation on the leaves of the Silver Vine.
The ‘Silvery Ann’ is only one of the many cultivars that are out there, most likely created for commercial purposes, such as the similar ‘Trebie’ cultivar..
Expert Tip
Care & Size Guidance
Scindapsus pictus is a very easy, low maintenance, beginner friendly plant that nonetheless delivers plenty of impact with its silvery foliage.
Thus one of the only problems you may face with the Silver Vine is overwatering. We recommend watering a little and fairly often (whilst still letting the top of the soil dry out between waterings) rather than watering excessively infrequently. This will help prevent the build up of water in its ornamental pot which is easy to forget about in its often high up hanging location and can quickly lead to root rot.
The size of the leaves will increase as the plant matures and the variegation will become more silvery, sometimes creating leaves that are almost totally silver. Feeding can be done either with a liquid balanced fertiliser or a foliar fertiliser whilst misting the whole vine and foliage.
It may require repotting every 2 years to give the roots a bit more space.
