Plant Biography
The leaves of Ficus lyrata can vary in shape amongst different cultivars, but the name ‘lyrata’ derives from the morphological term ‘lyrate’, used to describe the archetypal lobed leaves. Simply, lyrate leaves are any leaves shaped like a lyre, and Ficus lyrata is a quintessential example.
Native to western Africa, Ficus lyrata grows in lowland tropical rainforests up to about 15 metres tall.
Expert Tip
Care & Size Guidance
Ficus lyrata requires bright indirect light, good humidity and consistent temperatures. It has a tendency to drop leaves in less ideal conditions.
Water when the top few cm of soil is dry to the touch, and make sure the soil never sits in standing water.
Feed in the growing season and be sure not to over water in the darker months. It may be advisable to turn regularly if the sunlight reaches it from one side only, and foliage is likely to burn if kept in too direct sun – for instance, too close to south facing windows.
