Plant Biography
Native to the island of Madagascar, in many tropical environments this palm is commonly kept outside for its easy ornamental value. In the UK climate, it’s perfect for decorating any indoor space where it can get bright indirect light.
Dypsis lutescens goes by several common names, including Areca Palm, Golden Cane Palm and Butterfly Palm, the latter of which refers its iconic upwards curving leaves which resemble a butterfly.
Unlike Howea forsteriana, where several specimens are commonly planted together in one pot to achieve the full lush aesthetic, Dypsis lutescens’ many stems all grow from one specimen which forms clusters in the soil.
Expert Tip
Care & Size Guidance
Younger canes emerge green and tend to not show their full golden-yellow colour until the plant matures. Positioning the Dypsis lutescens in bright light will help to bring out the colour of the trunks and leaf bases.

Cant say I was too impressed with the plant or service. When ordering I never received a confirmation email for my order or tracking details, and when it did randomly arrive it was poorly packaged and had brown tips. Not really acceptable. Proceed with caution
The Palm Centre reply: Hi J, we do apologize for the issues youve had with your order. The website sends automatically emails for order confirmation and despatch notification. However, sometimes, these get filtered by some free email providers as they are wrongly classified as spam. With regards to your delivery, we are working with our courier partner to constantly improve the service they provide to our customers, given the unusual shapes of our parcels. Brown tips on mature leaves are not uncommon and they do not affect the plants survival.
