Hyophorbe verschaffeltii
Spindle Palm
£49.95
A handsome palm with an upright crown of mid-green leaves supported on a yellow rachis (leaf stem).
Indoors, it grows best with some direct sunshine, particularly in the winter months.
Its slow growth and elegant habit of growth make it a stunning specimen palm that can be enjoyed for years.
Plant Biography
The Spindle Palm is closely related to the Bottle Palm, Hyophorbe lagenicaulis but, as the name suggests, has a trunk swollen to a spindle – rather than bottle – shape. It is larger growing and holds its crown of pinnate leaves in a flatter, less recurved fashion.
Like its cousin, Hyophorbe verschaffetii is all but extinct in the wild, although widely cultivated throughout Mauritius and the Mascarene islands.
Here in the UK it is best grown in a warm conservatory, greenhouse or room indoors in a bright position.
Care & Size Guidance
Although this palm can get eventually get quite large, it is slow growing in pots so makes an ideal indoor plant. In summer, it can be kept outside in a sheltered garden or patio in part shade.
Allow the top 5-10cm of soil to dry out between watering.
Responds well to regular feeding with a palm fertiliser from April to September.
Repot every 2-3 years, when the roots are showing at the bottom of the pot. It’s preferable to use tall pots, rather then wide ones. This is because the young plants send their roots down rather than spread near the surface.

Both plants arrived in impeccable condition. The most immaculate palms you could hope for. Very swift order processing and delivery. Thank you for supplying this species. Could not be happier with the purchase.
