Plant Biography
Fargesia demissa ‘Gerry’ is a recent introduction to cultivation from China, via the Kimmei nursery in The Netherlands. It’s thought to be the northern-mist species of Fargesia and proven to be fairly hardy compared to other members of the family.
It grows as a sparse clump, as opposed to other Fargesia species which will grow dense clumps, almost like a hedge. This makes the Fargesia demissa ‘Gerry’ a better choice for a specimen plant in a planter or to create a miniature grove.
Like all other Fargesia, it will lose more than a quarter of its leaves in winter.
Based on notes from original collections, we also believe F. demissa to a be new generation of seedlings, meaning that flowering is unlikely for several decades.
Care & Size Guidance
Fargesia demissa ‘Gerry’ is an ideal plant for semi-shaded gardens, sheltered from afternoon sun and strong winds. Even though is a bamboo, it does not tolerate high heat and humidity. The leaves curl in strong sunlight for protection, but otherwise have a lush blue/green colour and airy arrangement.
Plant in moist soils with very good drainage in partial shade.
Feeding Fargesia plants
All bamboo plants are heavy feeders and periodic application of fertiliser is highly recommended to keep the plants thriving.
Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
