Plant Biography

The genus Passiflora, commonly known as Passion Flowers, comprises around 550 species primarily native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. First described by Linnaeus in 1753, Passiflora species were valued by indigenous cultures for their medicinal properties long before European discovery. The name “Passiflora” comes from Latin, meaning “passion flower,” due to the flower’s resemblance to Christian symbolism of the Passion of Christ.

Widely cultivated for their ornamental beauty and edible fruits, especially the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), these plants are significant in traditional medicine, horticulture, and agriculture. Today, numerous hybrids have been created to enhance flower size, colour and frequency. ‘Damsel’s Delight’ was created just down the road from the Palm Centre by plant breeder Myles Irvine of Riverside Passiflora.
