Plant Biography
Euphorbia resinifera originates in the Atlas mountains, in Morocco and it inhabit the Norther side of the slopes, sometimes to very high altitudes. Like most members of the Euphorbia family, the plant secretes an irritating sap that can be toxic if ingested.
In very hot summers the stems are adorned with bright yellow flowers, however this rarely happens outside its native environment.
Due to its “dark side”, the plant is rarely offered commercially and sometimes it can be almost impossible to find in UK nurseries.
Care & Size Guidance
Euphorbia resinifera will happily grow in containers and doesn’t require much soil to do so. Water sparingly during spring and every now and then if kept in pots in full sun. Keep dry throughout the winter time.
Repotting is rarely needed. When planting from the nursery pot to an outdoor pot, use a sharp-draining gritty soil. It can tolerate several degrees of frost when kept dry so could be trialled outside in the mildest parts of the country, however to be safe, we recommend bringing it undercover for the coldest months.
Feeding is rarely needed, however if you decide to apply fertiliser, make sure to use a balanced fertiliser diluted to half the strength recommended on the label.
Medicinal value
In antiquity, in the Mediterranean areas, the plant was used for medicinal purposes in many parts of the Roman Empire. The latex of the plant was dried up and turned into a yellowish-brown sticky mass and used in medicine.
Recent studies (2002-2016) have identified high concentrations of various compounds that can be considered a starting point for development of new medicine that can be used for pain treatment and to fight against cancer.
Local bee keepers in Morocco take their bee hives up the mountains in the areas where the E.resinifera is flowering to produce one of most appreciated honeys in Morocco. This honey is appreciated for its unique peppery taste, and its pungent and powerful aroma as well as its medical and cosmetic properties, especially by their antibacterial and antifungal activity.
