Chamaerops humilis

Mediterranean Fan Palm

(156 customer reviews)

From: £14.95

A beautiful and extremely tough palm, and deservedly one of our most popular.

The Mediterranean Fan Palm is a small clustering palm, with distinctive, huge green leaves which spread out in a very attractive fan form.

Chamaerops humilis is tolerant of drought once established, suited to sun or part shade, a cold garden or hot conservatory, exposed gardens or balcony planters – this palm is remarkably easy to look after and grow.

Plant Biography

Native to the Mediterranean and Southwestern Europe, Chamaerops humilis is the northernmost naturally occurring palm in the world, found as north as the south coast of France.

Chamaerops humilis is the only species in the genus Chamaerops, though the genus is closely related to the Asian genus Trachycarpus, differing in the spined petioles, and its multi-stemmed clustering habit.

The Mediterranean Fan Palm is a beautiful specimen plant for any garden. Unpruned it grows into an attractive shrubby form. If pruned, it will grow into a single trunk tree form. This palm works perfectly to add an accent to the corner of the landscape, or in a container for a patio or deck.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Chamaerops humilis has better winter hardiness than most other palms, tolerating brief dips to -6 to -9C. If grown in a colder area, it can be kept in a container to bring indoors when necessary, so long as it’s in a bright, sunny spot.

It prefers a bright and sunny location, but will tolerate part shade. However, if it’s grown in too much shade it will lose its compact form.

"Beautiful Palm, looks great in my new raised bed. I am ordering another one. Price is unbelievable for such a quality plant."

Ordered 2 of these palms to replace 2 date palms, which suffered badly through last winter. I already have 1 chamaerops humilis, which is about 2 years old and survived well through the winter of 2022. Placed order on Sunday (coronation weekend plus Monday as bank holiday),my order was acknowledged and despatched on the Tuesday and arrived on Wednesday morning. The packages arrived in perfect condition (still well moist),extremely well packaged.
First class courier service and excellent palms. It pays to purchase from a specialist, can’t praise the service enough. Website easy to navigate, prices competitive, delivery phenomenal. Well deserving of 5 star rating !
