Plant Biography

The botanical history of Begonia grandis traces back to its discovery in China and Japan. Described by European botanists in the 19th century, it belongs to the Begoniaceae family, which includes over 1,800 species.

Unlike many tropical begonias, Begonia grandis is hardy enough for temperate climates, making it popular in European gardens. Introduced to Western horticulture during the 1800’s plant exploration era, it gained attention for its tuberous roots, which help it tolerate colder temperatures.

Begonia grandis became a favourite for its resilience and beauty, and the ‘Snowpop’ cultivar with white flowers enhances its appeal even further.

Begonia grandis subsp. sinensis ‘Snowpop’ thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly to maintain soil moisture, but avoid waterlogging. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots.
