Plant Biography
The botanical history of Begonia grandis traces back to its discovery in China and Japan. Described by European botanists in the 19th century, it belongs to the Begoniaceae family, which includes over 1,800 species.
Unlike many tropical begonias, Begonia grandis is hardy enough for temperate climates, making it popular in European gardens. Introduced to Western horticulture during the 1800’s plant exploration era, it gained attention for its tuberous roots, which help it tolerate colder temperatures.
Begonia grandis became a favourite for its resilience and beauty, and the ‘Snowpop’ cultivar with white flowers enhances its appeal even further.

Care & Size Guidance
Begonia grandis subsp. sinensis ‘Snowpop’ thrives in partial to full shade, preferring moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water regularly to maintain soil moisture, but avoid waterlogging. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots. In colder climates, apply a thick layer of mulch in autumn to provide frost protection.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser during the growing season to promote lush foliage and flowering. This hardy begonia typically grows to about 50cm in height and spread when established, making it ideal for shaded borders and woodland gardens. Regular care ensures Begonia ‘Snowpop’ remains vibrant and healthy, adding colour and texture to shaded areas. Will happily grow in a large pot which can be moved undercover in colder areas.
Please bear in mind that this plant is deciduous. There is no growth above the soil between approximately November-April, depending on temperatures.
