Plant Biography

Geranium is a genus of 422 species of flowering plants found throughout the temperate regions of the world and the mountains of the tropics. The genus name is derived from the Greek géranos meaning ‘crane’. The common name is ‘cranesbill’, which is a reference to the shape of the seed pod on some species of Geranium which look like the bill of crane when unopened.

Geranium ‘Dragon Heart®’ is a notable cultivar of hardy geranium, known for its vibrant magenta flowers with a distinctive black centre. This particular variety was bred by renowned plantsman Alan Bremner from the Orkney Islands, Scotland. The cross-breeding involved Geranium psilostemon, contributing to its rich colour and robust nature. ‘Dragon Heart®’ gained popularity for its long blooming season, from late spring to early autumn, and its ability to thrive in various garden settings. Its vigorous growth and attractive foliage have made it a favourite among gardeners, earning a reputation for being both visually striking and low-maintenance.
