The common fig is a charismatic deciduous garden favourite, with large dramatic lobed foliage and delicious fruits, which grow best with root restriction and a sunny wall position. ‘Brown Turkey’ is the most popular cultivar for its reliable and prolific fruiting.
Ficus carica is native to Syria and Persia. It is one of the earliest plants to be cultivated by humans, and has been recorded as cultivated in Britain since Roman times!
Figs have a place in the mythology of a great many cultures, for example the Babylonian goddess Ishtar took the form of a divine fig tree Xikum, the ‘primeval mother at the central place of the earth.’
Botanically speaking, the fig fruit is an ‘infructescence’ – a type of multiple fruit. The sap of fig plants can be a skin irritant and for some the fruit is also an allergen.

Easy to look after but may occasionally require some attention in order to thrive.
Situation: Full Sun to Part Shade
Enjoys direct sun most of the day, but tolerant of fewer sunlit hours or light dappling.
Eventual Height: 3m

Expert Tip
If grown for fruit it requires careful pruning, root restriction and ideally wall protection. However they also make amazing ornamental foliage plants in their own right, and will bring abundant Mediterranean leafiness even to dry part shade!
Care & Size Guidance
Hard frosts may cut back the top growth but they are tough plants that can produce vigorous new growth from below ground if needed. They are a great choice for a large study container.
