Plant Biography
Native to Southern China, the Photinia x fraseri name honours the Fraser Nursery in Birmingham, Alabama where the hybrid originated around 1940.
New growth in spring emerges a bright, luminous red in a showy display lasting about 2 to 3 weeks. These leathery red leaves, with finely serrated margins, gradually change to glossy dark green colour. Around late April, heads of creamy white flowers add to the show just as the new foliage starts to lose its colour.
Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ is a vigorous evergreen shrub that can be pruned into a compact and colourful hedge.
Expert Tip
Care & Size Guidance
Photinia ‘Red Robin’ thrives in well-draining soil and prefers full sun to partial shade for optimal growth. If left to grow naturally, this versatile evergreen shrub can reach heights of up to 5 metres and spreads to about 4 metres wide, making it an ideal choice for hedges or standalone ornamental use. Regular watering, especially during dry spells, aids in establishing a robust root system.
Pruning in late spring encourages new growth and maintains its desired shape. This low-maintenance shrub adapts well to different soil types and climates, offering a vibrant and lush backdrop for gardens or landscapes throughout the year.
