Plant Biography
This iconic palm has been grown as a houseplant since Victorian times, gracing ‘parlours’ throughout the land, hence its common name the ‘Parlour Palm’.
The Victorians used their parlours to receive and impress guests, decorating them with their most lavish and luxurious possessions. Certainly impressive, C. elegans’ lush, deep green foliage and dense organic form have remained chic all this time, making it a perfect choice for just about any space.
Expert Tip
Care & Size Guidance
Unlike some palms suited for keeping indoors, Parlour Palms wont quickly take over the space they’re placed in due to their slow growing nature. What’s more, whilst they can grow up to a mighty 8 foot tall outdoors in their natural environment, their ultimate height grown indoors in the UK is a more manageable 4 foot.
Whilst they thrive best in bright indirect light, one of the appealing factors of a Chamaedorea elegans is how well it can still survive in shade and dry air, making it a brilliant gift for novice plant owners.
In milder locations C. elegans can potentially even be kept outdoors, surviving down to -6C or lower under evergreen canopy when given sufficient wrapping to protect the leaves.
As usual the Palm Centre have supplied wonderful quality plants delivered on time. Cant rate this company highly enough.

The plant is excellent apart from a couple of damaged leaves. When it arrived it was loose in the box and quite a lot of the compost had come out of the pot. It looked as though the cardboard layer with the hole which holds the pot was depressed on one side and the pot had worked loose. The courier did not ring or put a note through the door, but did leave it in the designated safe place.

A perfect purchase. Bought one Dyspis lutescens and 2 Chamaedorea elegans. All arrived in prime condition, packaging excellent. Delivery had to be delayed because of extreme cold weather. The plants were a gift and I was told that I could run the risk, if I chose to go ahead anyway, but I am glad I accepted their advice not to. These people are obviously professionals to be trusted.

Absolutely over the moon with the plant that arrived. It was really well packaged and after a good shake out it looks lovely. Really happy, thank you!
