Plant Biography

Agave x romani is a hybrid between two species: A. filifera and A. mitis var. albidior (formerly known as A. celsii). Believed to have been created by Belgian agave collector Jos de Vleeshouder.

Plant breeders have created agave hybrids between species to combine desirable traits such as improved hardiness, compact size, and enhanced ornamental appeal. By hybridising different Agave species, breeders can produce plants that are more adaptable to varying climates, making them suitable for wider cultivation, including in temperate regions.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Agave x romani can thrive in British gardens with proper care. Plant it in a well-draining, gritty soil mix, ideally in a container for easy relocation during winter. While it can tolerate partial-shade, it prefers full sun. Protect it from excess rain and frost by moving it indoors or using frost covers in colder months (but being careful to ensure adequate air flow). In mild regions, consider planting it in a sheltered spot with excellent drainage.

Agave x romani typically grows up to 60 cm in height and width, making it a compact choice for patios or gardens. Water sparingly, especially in winter, to avoid root rot, and ensure it gets plenty of light for healthy growth. If fertilising, use a product that is specifically formulated for cacti and succulents, and use a weaker dilution than recommended.
