Nolina nelsonii
Soyate, Blue Beargrass Tree
Soyate is an exceptionally architectural and imposing trunk-forming plant, rivalling any yucca for dramatic presence.
Nolina nelsonii is certainly a robust species, with grey-blue toothed leaves that grow up to 80 centimetres long, held in a stiff dome with a short ‘petticoat’ of spent leaves forming beneath.

Plant Biography
Nolina nelsonii is related to Yucca and Dasylirion, sitting in the diverse Asparagus family (Asparagaceae). It hails from a limited range within Northeastern Mexico. Its native habitat is dry desert, and large quantities are found in the mountainous regions of Tamaulipas.
In the wild, mature plants can achieve a trunk of 3 metres tall. Eventually it will form a flower spike that protrudes a further 2-3.4 metres from the foliage! After blooming, the plant’s main trunk dies and multiple lateral trunks emerge to take its place.

Care & Size Guidance
In comparison to many of its relatives, it is actually reasonably quick to grow in size – especially in urban or coastal gardens.
This plant has low irrigation needs, and even in a container requires little to no water in the colder months.
