Plant Biography

A recent discovery from China, the Fargesia nitida ‘Gansu 2’ is the second cultivar of Gansu discovered in the Gansu province. Building on it’s original species, F.nitida, the ‘Gansu 2’ has a slender habit, with narrow smooth to the touch leaves.

It evolved primarily as an understory plant in mountainous forests, growing under pines on slopes and along stream banks, where it can receive the large amount of water it requires.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Compared to other species of bamboo, the Fargesia nitida ‘Gansu 2’ would thrive in a part shaded position, rather than full sun. Its origins, in the understory of alpine forests, point to this fact.

It is perfectly suited to grow in a container, and it does not mind being slightly pot bound. The shallow root system will benefit from having mulch applied to keep moisture in the ground.

Feeding Fargesia plants

All bamboo plants are heavy feeders and periodic application of fertiliser is highly recommended to keep the plants thriving.

Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
