Trachycarpus wagnerianus
Waggy, Dwarf Chusan Palm

Not known at all in the wild, Trachycarpus wagnerianus is a close relative of Trachycarpus fortunei, and is particularly close to our hearts. The Dwarf Chusan Palm is an exceptionally hardy evergreen tree that forms a single hairy trunk and attractive large palmate leaves, which form an impressive crown as it grows.
It differs from T. fortunei by its smaller leaves which maintain their upright form, unlike T. fortunei’s which bend over time. The Dwarf Chusan Palm is more compact, making it more suitable for container growth, and is much tougher and more wind resilient than T. fortunei.
Plant Biography
Trachycarpus wagnerianus was originally introduced into Europe from Japan in the 19th century, where it was a domestic cultivar not known to the wild. It remained in relative obscurity until recently when its qualities as a garden plant were realised.
The wagnerianus is particularly close to our hearts as The Palm Centre played major a part in its European reintroduction. After acquiring some seeds from the very few UK nurseries which had them at the time, we grew our own mother plants and ended up distributing its seeds all over Europe.
The specific cultivar of wagnerianus we selected is particularly compact, and now, years later, we can see those traits in the specimens grown across the continent.

Care & Size Guidance
Trachycarpus wagnerianus performs best in part shade, but it is still happy with full sun.
Unlike Trachycarpus fortunei, T. wagnerianus can handle some winds.
In summer it produces drooping panicles of yellowish flowers.

It was well packaged and the palm was healthy and green. I purchased the 7ltr pot. The palm was slightly smaller then expected and the root system was not a 7lt pot tree. When I went to plant it and removed it from the pot the soil just fell off because there was not enough root system to hold it together. If palm was a bit bigger and a better root system it would be a 10/10 purchase but because of these slight issues its a 7/10.
