Senegal Date Palm, Wild Date Palm

£64.95

Phoenix reclinata, commonly known as the Senegal Date Palm, is rarely seen for sale in the UK and brings a touch of the tropics indoors with its graceful, arching fronds and slender, clumping trunks. When cultivated as an indoor plant, it typically reaches heights of 2-3 metres, making it a striking focal point in spacious rooms or conservatories.

The feathery, pinnate leaves extend outward, creating an elegant canopy that adds a lush, green ambiance to interior spaces. Its multiple stems, each adorned with a crown of vibrant green fronds, contribute to its full and bushy appearance, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of any indoor setting. Can take a degree or two of frost, so could be tried outdoors in the mildest locations.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Phoenix reclinata, or Senegal Date Palm, thrives indoors with bright light and well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Water moderately, allowing the topsoil to dry between waterings to prevent root rot. During the growing season, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser sparingly.

This palm prefers temperatures between 18°C to 29°C and can be placed outdoors in a sheltered, sunny spot during summer months. However, it should be brought indoors when temperatures drop below 5°C. Regularly inspect for pests like spider mites and prune dead or damaged fronds to maintain its appearance.

When larger, it is hardy to a couple of degrees of frost, so could be tried as an outdoor plant in the mildest of locations, with some additional protection.
