A dramatic compact shrub with a maximum size of 1.5 metres, with fantastic dark purple evergreen foliage.
The spidery pink flowers are very like those of witch-hazel and produced in February and March.

Origin: Japan and south-eastern Asia
Genus: Loropetalum
Species / Cultivar: chinense 'Black Pearl'
Common Name: Chinese Fringe Flower
Plant Biography
Loropetalum chinense is native to Japan and south-eastern Asia including southern China. It was introduced to UK in 1880.
In China, from where specimens in cultivation originate, this species is mainly or wholly confined to warm regions and low altitudes – hence needing winter protection in colder gardens. It might prove hardier if cultivars were developed from Japanese populations, which grow in harsher environments and may be hardier.

Wants direct, unfiltered sunlight most of the day, such as a south facing position.

Eventual Spread: 1.2-1.8m
The plant's ultimate spread in typical growing conditions.

Expert Tip
This unusual plant creates wonderful year round interest, and works brilliantly as contrast amongst greener planting schemes - perhaps throwing in a few other dark purple accents like Salvia 'Caradonna' or Phormium 'Platts Black' to tie everything together.
Care & Size Guidance
Better for milder gardens, this will thrive in a sheltered sunny spot away from frost pockets and harsh winds. Loropetalum has few pests and requires no pruning except to maintain desired size.
Very competitively priced plant in a good size pot and excellent condition. Lovely leaf colour and will produce beautiful dark red flowers.

5 customer reviews for Loropetalum chinense ‘Black Pearl’
Rated 4 out of 5
Plant arrived quickly and I was kept updated on delivery progress. Plant was well packaged although the box was a little narrow for such a bushy plant, and meant that a couple of the branches were broken. That said, the Loropetalum looks very healthy and has a good shape and leaf colour. Can’t wait to get it planted out.
