Betula utilis, or Himalayan Birch, is a magnificent medium sized tree with oval green leaves that turn yellow in autumn. The most attractive feature is its bark – shining pale reddish brown to white with prominent horizontal bands called lenticels. The bark peels off in broad, very thin strips and has been used historically for paper in the writing of manuscripts by monks.
