Plant Biography

Yucca linearis, commonly known as narrow-leaf yucca, belongs to the Asparagaceae family and is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of Northern Mexico. It is closely related to Yucca rostrata and was once considered a variety of it, but has since been recognised as a distinct species due to its finer, more flexible leaves.

Yuccas have a long history of use by Indigenous peoples for their fibrous leaves, which were used for weaving, and their edible flower stalks. As a hardy, drought-tolerant plant, Yucca linearis has gained popularity in modern landscaping, particularly in xeriscapes and architectural garden designs.

Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Yucca linearis thrives in the UK when planted in well-drained soil and full sun. This hardy plant grows slowly to heights of up to 4 metres and a spread of up to 1.5 metres, making it suitable for borders or containers.

It is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering. During the colder months, protect it from excessive moisture, as it can be susceptible to rot in wet conditions. Trim any dead leaves to maintain its clean, sculptural appearance. While it can survive UK winters, it is essential to keep it dry.
