Plant Biography
The Fargesia nitida x murielae ‘Winter Joy’ is a very recent addition to the long list of hybrids of Fargesia. Introduced in 2005 alongside Viking and Obelisk varieties, the Winter Joy is the product of crossing the F.nitida and F.murielae which happened to flower at the same time.
As bamboo flowers only when it matures, after tens of years, this variety is here to stay.
Care & Size Guidance
The Fargesia “Winter Joy” prefers partial shade to full sun. It can tolerate some shade, but for optimal growth and density, provide it with at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day. It hrives in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. Ensure the soil is moist but not waterlogged, as excessive waterlogging can lead to root rot.
Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth. Ensure the mulch is not in direct contact with the bamboo’s stems to prevent potential rotting.
Fargesia nitida x murielae ‘Winter Joy’ is a clumping bamboo and does not spread aggressively like running bamboos. However, if you wish to contain its growth, consider installing a root barrier around the planting area.
Expert Tip
Feeding Fargesia plants
All bamboo plants are heavy feeders and periodic application of fertiliser is highly recommended to keep the plants thriving.
Feed with slow release bamboo fertiliser twice a year to encourage strong healthy plants.
Delivered on time, amazing packaging and perfect undamaged plants. IÂ’ve now planted them and, although a bit late in the season, they should be happy in the ground.
