Butia odorata is a spectacular fountain of elegant greyish blue-green fronds which arch gracefully above a dense broad trunk.

Established specimens of the Jelly Palm tolerate cool wet British conditions remarkably well, though may need some protection from harsh winters in colder gardens.

Plant Biography

Endemic to the dry woodlands and savannahs of South America, the Butia odorata has been know for many years as “Butia capitata var. odorata”, a subspecies of the Butia capitata. Recent studies have reclassified the palm tree under its own species name.

It’s a very compact palm tree, with long pinnate leaves that arch and recurve, forming a fountain like crown atop a thick stout trunk. It can grow to 6 m in height, with an impressive spread, albeit very slow in the UK.

Expert Tip

Wrap a horticultural fleece around the crown in harsh winters to protect the plant from frost forming on the leaves of the palm tree.
Care & Size Guidance

Care & Size Guidance

Butia odorata is quite tough and hardy, though it does best in free draining soil, that’s plenty fertile, situated in full sun to part shade.

It thrives best in milder parts of the UK, and should be protected from wind if planted near the coast. Make sure to avoid any overly damp or waterlogged soil, and feed regularly.

I have received the plants in good condition and when sent request for additional information I have received quick response. Highly recommended.

Arrived securely packed the day after dispatch. The plant looks very strong and healthy, a bit bigger than we expected.

Plant arrived on time, well protected and is now planted. Just hope I have enough years left to appreciated it!

The palm was delivered with utmost care in the packaging and speed of delivery (to keep the plant healthy). It was in great condition and clearly had been well-looked after. My only disappointment was for a 90-100cm product mine only measured out at 81cm, however its rapidly producing new leaves and has a robust base, so expect good growth this summer. This palm has a wonderful exotic, architectural look and is a pleasure to watch grow.
