Plant Biography

It is impossible to walk past this tree without running your hand over the smooth shiny trunk – indeed this helps keep it shining! If the bark wasn’t enough, additional features include dangling catkins which, in spring, provide early season pollen for bees and, in autumn, foliage turns warm buttery yellow. Chalky soils are best avoided but otherwise Betula utilis var jacquemontii is an undemanding, tolerant and attractive tree.
