Plant Biography

‘Red Robin’ is a particularly robust and colourful cultivar selected in New Zealand for its bright scarlet new growth; rivalling Pieris for early spring colour but less fussy about soil requirements. It is a vigorous evergreen shrub that, in this instance, have been be pruned into a compact espalier form, making it easy to grow against a wall or fence or, indeed, as a free standing hedge. Heads of creamy white flowers add to the show in late spring, just as the new foliage starts to lose it’s colour. Then prune it again after flowering for more red! Or, in a sunny spot, leave flowers to set bird friendly red berries.
